The former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia star has explained why he is not sure over the transparency of the upcoming FKF elections.

Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, a former Kenya international and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential aspirant, has voiced his concerns over the upcoming elections, calling for a transparent and clean process.

As the December 7 election approach, Owino is particularly focused on ensuring that the list of delegates who will cast votes is genuine and fair.

Owino’s remarks come amidst growing complaints from several candidates vying for the FKF top seat, many of whom have raised concerns about the integrity of the election process.

"They have published the list of clubs that are lined up to vote, who will vote in those clubs and other voters, but we will be eager to know the final publication of the delegates who will decide on December 7 elections," Owino emphasised as quoted on Citizen Digital.

"After we have this, then we will be able to determine whether there is light or not."

Owino has not shied away from expressing his reservations about the fairness of the electoral process.

He openly admitted that it’s difficult to predict whether the elections will be entirely free and fair but urged for a process that would at least be accepted by the majority.

"It’s very hard to predict whether the elections will be 100 per cent free and fair. But if it is possible, even if it will not make 100 per cent, let it be conducted in a way that at least the majority will be able to accept,” he stated.

In his campaign blueprint, Owino has outlined his vision to professionalise football in Kenya and improve the welfare of players. He stressed the importance of footballers receiving adequate compensation to secure their futures beyond the pitch.

"Obviously, we want to be professional, and our players to go full-time professional in football. That is our goal. If you aren’t getting good pay as a player and you can’t invest for life after football, then there is a problem,” Owino asserted.

Owino is one of many candidates vying for the FKF presidency, alongside notable figures like Barry Otieno, the immediate former FKF Chief Executive Officer; Tom Alila, a former FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) member for Nyanza; Murang’a Seal vice-chairman Hussein Mohammed; and Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula, chairman of Kakamega Homeboyz.

With the election day fast approaching, the race for the FKF top seat is expected to intensify, with each candidate laying out their plans to improve football in Kenya.
