FOOTBALL: FKF makes radical change to women’s league structure

Kenya will now have three women’s divisions with the Women’s National Super League becoming the second-tier divided in two zones

Football Kenya Federation has introduced a second-tier women’s league which will kick off from next season.

Just like the men’s second division, the new league will be called FKF Women’s National Super League which will be split into two zones, Zone A and Zone B commencing from the 2023-24 season.

The teams participating in the FKF Women’s National Super League have been selected from those relegated from the 2022-23 FKF Women’s Premier League season and the top-performing teams in the 2022-23 final FKF Women’s Division One league standings.

Zone A will consist of teams from Nairobi and Coast region, while Zone B will feature teams from the Nyanza and Upper Rift Valley regions.

In Zone A for the 2023-24 season, the teams are Uweza Women (Nairobi), Mathare United Women (Nairobi), Mombasa Olympic (South Coast), MTG United (North Coast), Falling Waters Barcelona (Central), Sunderland Samba (Nairobi), Macmillan Queens (Nairobi), Kangemi Starlets (Nairobi), and Kayole Starlet (Nairobi).

On the other hand, Zone B will have Kisumu Allstarlets (Nyanza), Kisped Queens (Nyanza), Gideon Starlets (Nyanza), Royal Starlets (Upper Rift), Eldoret Falcons (Upper Rift), Kolwa Falcons (Nyanza), and Gene Queens (Upper Rift). The league is tentatively scheduled to kick off on September 30.

The federation has plans to expand the FKF Women’s National Super League into 10 teams in each zone from the 2024-25 campaign.

The FKF Women Division One, which has been the second-tier split in in two zones, will now be the third women’s division and will now have four zones: Zone A, B, C, and D.

Zone A will comprise teams from Nairobi, Central, and Eastern regions, while Zone B will host teams from the North Coast and South Coast regions.

Zone C will feature teams from Nyanza and Lower Rift regions, and Zone D will include teams from Western and Upper Rift regions. The league will tentatively begin on October 14.
