The former Super Eagles boss Finidi George and Rivers United recorded some firsts against Ijebu United in Ikenne.

Finidi George may have endured a tumultuous spell as Nigeria's national team manager, but the former Super Eagles boss has wasted no time in reminding his countrymen of his pedigree with a masterful display at the helm of Rivers United.

The 53-year-old, who resigned from his position with the Super Eagles last month after a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign, oversaw a dominant 2-0 victory for his Rivers United side against Ijebu United in their Group B clash at the Value Jet Cup on Thursday.

In a match that marked Finidi's first official outing since departing the national team setup, the Pride of Rivers became the first team to score in the first half and net more than one goal in the pre-season tournament.

Finidi, whose illustrious playing career saw him win the Champions League with Ajax, has wasted no time in stamping his authority on his new club.

The former Nigeria international, who was unveiled as Rivers United's new boss in a celebrated homecoming just weeks after he resigned from the national team, showed the Nigerian public exactly what they're missing with a stylish brace in Ikenne.

After a turbulent end to his tenure as Super Eagles manager, Finidi will undoubtedly be keen to prove a point, and Thursday's dominant performance against Ijebu United suggests he still has plenty to offer the Nigerian game.

The match also marked the first official outing for Finidi following his acrimonious departure from the national team setup, with the 53-year-old leaving his post after just two matches in charge.

Nigeria's 1-1 draw against South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic left the Super Eagles' FIFA World Cup dreams hanging in the balance, and Finidi ultimately decided to step down from his role.

However, the former Enyimba boss has wasted little time in returning to the dugout, and his impressive start with Rivers United will undoubtedly have Nigerian fans dreaming of what could have been had he remained in charge of the national team.

With his tactical acumen, man-management skills, and deep understanding of the game, Finidi George is certainly a coach with the potential to lead Nigeria to greater heights.
