World football's governing body have no intention of scrapping the FIFA Club World Cup despite protest from several groups
FIFA has affirmed its stance regarding the scheduling of the upcoming 32-team Club World Cup, brushing aside threats from various stakeholders, including Player Unions and various leagues across the world.
Objections from the global players' union FIFPRO and the World Leagues Association (WLA) have not discouraged FIFA, who are determined to stick to their decision to proceed with the expanded competition.
Groups challenge FIFA's Club World Cup
FIFPRO and WLA have expressed concerns about the oversaturation of the global football calendar, noting possible threats to player safety and disruption of national competitions.
In a letter to FIFA's leadership, the two groups urged a reassessment of the plans, emphasising the burden on both players and leagues.
FIFA to continue with Club World Cup despite complaints
In reaction to the criticism, FIFA denied allegations of unilateral decision-making and emphasised its collaboration with stakeholders during the consultation process. While noting the issues voiced, FIFA stated a willingness to participate in additional conversations during the offseason. However, the governing body remains committed to the agreed timeline and competitive format.
Despite FIFA standing firm on its decision, discussions between the concerned parties are expected to continue, with FIFPRO and WLA aiming to address their issues ahead of the upcoming FIFA Congress. FIFA have also stated that they remain determined to proceed with its plans for the Club World Cup and the broader international football calendar.
