The former England international was critical of the apparent refereeing mistake that allowed Arsenal to beat Tottenham
Former Premier League striker Les Ferdinand has angered Gunners fans by claiming that Gabriel Magalhaes’ winning goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham should have been disallowed.
Gabriel goal raises controversy
The goal, which came from a powerful header by the Brazilian defender, secured Arsenal’s third consecutive win away at their North London rivals and moved them up to second in the Premier League table.
However, Ferdinand highlighted a key moment in the build-up, stating that Gabriel had shoved Tottenham defender Cristian Romero before leaping to meet Bukayo Saka’s corner.
The former Newcastle United and Tottenham forward said after the match, “If a centre forward does that, the referee gives a foul against him,” pointing out that the push on Romero warranted a foul and should have led to the goal being ruled out.
Arsenal edge past Spurs in tense derby
Despite not being at their best, Arsenal managed to snatch a crucial win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pulling within two points of reigning champions Manchester City.
While Spurs dominated the early proceedings, as Arsenal missed the services of a number of first team stars, the Gunners remained resilient.
Goalkeeper David Raya was pivotal to the eventual win, making several key saves to keep the game level during a frantic first half, while Spurs forward Dominic Solanke missed critical chances to put Tottenham ahead.
Arsenal’s win came in a match filled with intensity and physicality, with a record seven yellow cards issued in the first half alone.
