The Brazilian star is currently out on bail while he appeals his four-and-a-half year sentence and has been heckled by fans in his home country
There is mounting anger directed towards Daniel Alves, the former Barcelona and Sevilla defender, following his recent legal troubles.
Outcry Against Dani Alves
Alves, who was released on bail on Monday afternoon, is currently awaiting the outcome of his appeal against a rape conviction, which he launched earlier this month.
The controversy surrounding Alves has particularly resonated in Brazil, especially in his hometown of Juazeiro. The 40-year-old football icon has a statue erected in his honor there, but in recent months, there have been growing calls for its removal.
Questioning Values and Dignity
Manuella Tyler Medrado, a student and activist, expressed strong opposition to the presence of Alves’ statue in Juazeiro. In an interview with EFE (via Marca), Medrado highlighted that allowing the statue to remain sends a troubling message about the value and dignity of women.
“We have to form a society where rape culture is not normalized. This is a great opportunity to make it clear that sexual crimes have to be repudiated,” Medrado emphasized.
Fans’ Call for Action Awaiting Resolution
Despite the outcry, Alves' statue still stands in Juazeiro, albeit it has been subject to vandalism on multiple occasions. The local government is facing mounting pressure to take action and remove the statue in response to public sentiment.
As Dani Alves' legal battle continues, the fate of his statue in Juazeiro remains uncertain. While some advocate for its removal in light of the serious allegations against him, others argue for due process and await the outcome of his appeal. The situation underscores broader conversations about accountability, justice, and the role of public figures in society.
