Explained: Why Martin Zubimendi has yet to finalise Arsenal move amid Real Madrid hijack reports

It was widely reported in January that Martin Zubimendi was in talks to join Arsenal in the summer, but it has recently emerged that Real Madrid are plotting to hijack the move.

In January, widespread reports suggested that Martin Zubimendi was on course to swap Real Sociedad for the allure of Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta keen to bring him to the Emirates this summer.

However, the move has since stalled, with negotiations cooling in recent months, leading to speculation that the Spain international might be considering alternative options, including Real Madrid.

Renowned journalist David Ornstein has now shed light on why the deal has yet to be completed, offering clarity on the Euro 2024 winner’s immediate future.

"Arsenal are expecting Zubimendi to join them from Real Sociedad in the summer," Ornstein wrote in The Athletic.

"I don’t know if that means it is completely done, but for some time now, they have been working on the basis that he’ll be coming in.

"A huge amount of work went into getting them to that point—while Edu was still sporting director and subsequently when Jason Ayto took over that job on an interim basis.

"Andrea Berta will be starting soon as Edu’s permanent successor, so we will hopefully learn a bit more on this one, and other areas, in due course."

Zubimendi, 26, has built a reputation as one of Europe's most intelligent midfielders, drawing comparisons to Sergio Busquets for his composure, tactical awareness, and ability to dictate play.

He has become a crucial figure for both Real Sociedad and the Spanish national team, demonstrating his versatility and reliability in the heart of midfield.

Arsenal's pursuit of the Basque-born midfielder has intensified in recent months, with reports indicating that the Gunners are prepared to trigger his €60 million release clause.

Arteta, who shares Basque roots with Zubimendi, is believed to be a major influence behind the move, viewing him as a long-term solution for Arsenal’s midfield amid expected departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

Interestingly, Zubimendi turned down a lucrative offer from Liverpool last summer, choosing to remain at Real Sociedad for another season out of loyalty to his boyhood club.

However, with Arsenal leading the race for his signature, it appears he is now ready for a new challenge in the Premier League.
