Shabana struck a 75-million shilling partnership with SportPesa on Thursday over a three-year period, but how will that money be used?

Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL)side Shabana last Thursday secured a significant three-year sponsorship deal worth Ksh 75 million from leading gaming firm SportPesa.

This partnership, which translates to Ksh 25 million annually, marks a major milestone for the club as it gears up for the 2024/2025 season . But how exactly will this financial boost be put to use? Let's break it down.

How will the money be used?

Shabana FC Chairman Jared Nivaton has emphasized that the primary focus of this sponsorship will be on ensuring that player and staff salaries are paid promptly.

With the club's annual operating costs estimated at Ksh 60 million, the Ksh 25 million from SportPesa will play a crucial role in covering these essential expenses.

“Whenever we get any sponsorship, our priority has always been to cater for salaries. Last season, we were the only team that covered salaries on time the whole season,” Nivaton said.

“Not only salaries but also winning bonuses. We also had to dip into our pockets on occasion to make sure the club continued operating without affecting the playing staff and technical bench.”

This financial stability is vital for maintaining morale and performance levels within the team. In addition to salaries, a portion of the sponsorship funds will be allocated to winning bonuses and player incentives.

Last season, Shabana FC consistently rewarded players with bonuses, a practice that will continue to motivate the squad in their quest to break into the top half of the league standings.

Exploring additional revenue streams

While the SportPesa sponsorship is a significant boost, it is not the club's only source of revenue. Shabana FC also benefits from broadcasting deals with companies like Azam and KBC, which could contribute up to Ksh 10 million.

Additionally, matchday revenue from ticket sales will supplement these funds, allowing the club to manage its finances more effectively.

Nivaton also hinted at ongoing discussions to secure more sponsorships. “We are in negotiations with other non-betting organizations to come on board.

"We are in negotiations with them to see where we can give them exposure, maybe the shorts, the sleeves, and in a few weeks, we might have somebody coming on board again, and we will be grateful.”

Shabana’s 2024/2025 season plans

As Shabana FC gears up for the new season, they have made significant moves in the transfer market to bolster their squad.

The club has brought in notable signings such as Elvis Osok and Titus Achesa from Posta Rangers, Kevin Omundi from MCF, and Cliff Nyakeya from AFC Leopards. These additions will give head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo a range of options as he prepares the team for a challenging campaign.

Shabana FC’s season kicks off with an away match against Bidco United at Thika Stadium on Saturday, August 24th. With the financial backing from SportPesa and a strengthened squad, the club is poised to make a strong statement in their second season back in the top flight.
