Oliseh: Success for club and country
Oliseh, a renowned midfielder in his heydays, enjoyed remarkable success with the Super Eagles. He was a key member of Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup squad in 1994 and won the AFCON in the same year. The 49-year-old was also part of the legendary dream team that triumphed in the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996.

Ex-Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh sang praises of Spain after La Roja beat England to win Euro 2024.
It can be argued that the stint of success for the Super Eagles in the late 90s contributed immensely to Oliseh’s club career; after Atlanta 96, he bagged a move to Ajax. He left the Dutch side after three years, and the two clubs he joined after were Juventus and then Borussia Dortmund.
In a recent tweet, Oliseh suggested that missing the last World Cup, the Olympics, and having failed to lift the AFCON in over a decade has limited the choices of Super Eagles players in the transfer market.

In replying to a tweet that announced Fiorentina’s signing of Moroccan defender Amir Richardson—who recently won bronze with Morocco in the Paris Olympics—Oliseh drew parallels between the success of Nigerian national teams and the attractiveness of the country's players to top clubs.
“For Nigerian players to start breaking back into top European clubs and the huge benefits that follow it both to the nation and to the players, there is no secret; Our players need to start winning things and playing attractively at the National team levels. Simple!!”
While Victor Osimhen continues to seek European suitors willing and able to match Napoli's ask for him, many Nigerian stars have made important moves this summer.
Ademola Lookman has been tempted by Saudi Arabia’s petrodollar, while William Troost Ekong is set to switch Greek PAOK Thessaloniki for Al-Khalood.
Wilfred Ndidi had his pick of suitors this summer before opting for a Leicester stay, while Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke recently completed moves to Europa League record holders, Sevilla.
Emerging star Fisayo Dele-Bashiru joined Lazio this summer from Turkey; Stanley Nwabali and Bright Osayi-Samuel have a slew of suitors; and the likes of Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Boniface are expected to rise in profile at their current top clubs.
