Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman believes Kimpembe should get the PSG captaincy ahead of Mbappe
Former Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kingsley Coman, has revealed his preferred candidate for the club’s captaincy in the event that current captain Marquinhos leaves.
Coman, who currently plays with PSG’s Tuesday UEFA Champions League opponents Bayern Munich, came up through PSG’s youth ranks and was part of the team that won Ligue 1 titles in 2013 and 2014 before jetting off to Juventus.
PSG’s captaincy drama
It was while at PSG that Coman met and became friends with Presnel Kimpembe, the man he feels should be given an opportunity to lead the team as captain when the time comes for the decision to be made.
Both Mbappe and Kimpembe have deputised for Marquinhos this season at different points, with the defender even having to clear the air on Instagram when coach Christophe Galtier claimed he had selected Mbappe as the club’s permanent vice-captain.
The Bayern Munich forward could not hide his sentiment when asked by Canal + who he thought should be PSG’s next captain on a permanent basis saying, "I’m not impartial, it’s the friendship that’s talking here, but it would be great to always see Presnel as PSG captain, even if he has had the armband many times. It would be a source of pride for me.”
Coman wants to see Kimpembe as captain to inspire youth players
However, Coman also pointed out that his choice was not only based on the friendship that the two shared, but also due to the fact that it would be a great source of inspiration for the players in the club’s academy to see Kimpembe, who has been in their shoes, become captain of the club.
He said, "Even for PSG’s young players, to see that one of us has gone all the way to the top to become captain, in a team with stars from all over, that buys great players, it would be great. Personally, even if I like Marqui, Presnel as captain speaks to me more."
Coman will certainly put all friendships aside when Bayern Munich take on PSG for a place in the UCL round of 16 at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
Kimpembe, who has been ruled out of the rest of the 2022/23 season with an Achilles injury, will not take part in the fixture, but Kylian Mbappe, who is in great form after five goals in the last three games, will play against Coman and Bayern Munich.
