Mark Halsey, a former referee at the Premier League has explained why Ricardo Calafiori's goal should have been disallowed.

A lot has been said about the Manchester City and Arsenal match but one topic will be labelled as the 'biggest pub fight for this season'.

Was Riccardo Calafiori's goal a fair one?

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has raised concerns over the validity of Arsenal’s equalising goal against Manchester City.

Speaking to The Sun, Halsey suggested that the goal, scored by Riccardo Calafiori, should not have stood due to a key officiating error.

The incident occurred in the 22nd minute when Arsenal was awarded a free-kick. Halsey pointed out that referee Michael Oliver called City’s Kyle Walker over for a discussion just before the set-piece was taken.

This left Walker out of position, allowing Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli to exploit the gap and assist Calafiori, who curled a beautiful shot into the top corner.

Halsey explained, “Walker had every right to feel aggrieved over Calafiori’s goal. When a referee calls a player over, he must allow him to get back into position before play resumes. Oliver should have waited for Walker to return to his right-back spot before restarting the game.”

The decision not to halt play as Walker repositioned himself proved costly for City, as Arsenal capitalised on the momentary lapse in their defence.

Halsey emphasized that the goal was a direct result of Walker's absence from his usual position, asserting that this crucial oversight by the officiating team should have resulted in the goal being disallowed.

This controversial moment added to the post-match discussions, with both managers expressing frustration over the officiating.

City’s Pep Guardiola was seen reacting furiously after the equaliser, while Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta had his own grievances, particularly regarding the sending-off of Leandro Trossard and the late equaliser scored by John Stones.
