Aubameyang’s ghost performance for Chelsea against Manchester City has led to heavy criticism from a former Chelsea striker.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has urged the club to “pay up” Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract if no suitor can be found for the striker in January.

The Gabonese striker had a poor outing in Chelsea’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City in which he came off the bench in the fifth minute to replace the injured Raheem Sterling and was taken off in the 65th minute himself having failed to affect the game.

Sutton ripped into Aubameyang with heavy words of criticism after the game and suggested that the striker should never play for the club again.

“I thought Aubameyang was hopeless in truth, offered very little,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live in reaction to the game.

“The Aubameyang substitution is really telling, it’s embarrassing. He’s been hauled off and rightly so,” Sutton continued.

"Aubameyang looked like he didn’t want to be here this evening. He’s not the only one. Cucurella, they’ve spent an absolute fortune on him and he looks well, well short for a Chelsea team that want to win trophies," said rounding up.

Chris Sutton played for Chelsea in the 1999/00 season

Chris Sutton only played one season for Chelsea, in 1999/00 in which he flopped massively, scoring just three goals in 39 games across all competitions.

The England international was sold after to Celtic and is now a television pundit after retiring from football in 2007.
