After leaving Chelsea by mutual consent at the end of last season, Mauricio Pochettino could be set for a new role in management already.

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant United States Men's National Team (USMNT) head coach position following the team's disappointing performance in the recent Copa America, which led to the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter.

Pochettino is seen as one of the favourites to get the USMNT job, and his connections with Matt Crocker, the current sporting director of U.S. Soccer, could steer him towards the national team role.

The two worked together during Pochettino’s tenure at Southampton, where Crocker was responsible for the team's academy, and this relationship is believed to be a significant factor in U.S. Soccer's interest in bringing the Argentine coach on board.

During his time at Southampton, Pochettino led the team to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, which set the stage for his successful stint at Tottenham Hotspur, where he reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2019.

Pochettino’s experience coaching at the highest level, including managing world-class players like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar at PSG, makes him an attractive candidate for the USMNT role, who are in a period of transition.

Why Pochettino may choose USA

The USMNT head coach position might not seem like the most appealing compared to other national teams like England, but with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted by the United States, this presents a unique opportunity to coach the hosts of the biggest competition in the world.

The USMNT is also filled with young, dynamic players, such as Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, Gio Reyna, and Tim Weah, who have been seen as underperforming under Berhalter's cautious tactics but could now be maximised under Pochettino.

Former USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard has publicly endorsed Pochettino for the role, praising his coaching style and ability to instill an attacking identity in his teams, and he hopes that USMNT can rebound from its Copa America disappointment under the Argentine tactician.
