The 31-year-old forward was on-hand to help Lyon snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as he scored his 21st to 24th goals of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season, including a 100th minute winning penalty, to leapfrog Paris-Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe to the top of the league’s scorer’s charts.

Although Mbappe’s goal against Troyes meant the two forwards are now ties on 24 goals for the season, Lacazette’s sensational feat still saw him enter the Ligue 1 history books.

The Lyon man was not the only player in sensational form when Les Gones took on Montpellier, as Elyes Wahi, Les Paillade’s French forward with Ivorian roots also scored four times in the sensational nine-goal thriller.

Wahi came close to giving his side a famous victory over Lyon, putting them 4-1 up inside 60 minutes, but a late comeback helped in no small way by Lacazette ensured that the hosts came away with all three points.

Wahi and Lacazette hit milestone goals.

Despite Wahi not beng able to secure the victory for Montpellier, he still ensured that he would be remembered forever in Les Paillade history after becoming the first player in the club’s history to score four goals in one Ligue 1 match.

With two players on both teams scoring four goals, the Lyon versus Montpellier fixture saw a Ligue 1 record equalled as it was the first game to feature opposing players scoring at least four goals in a Ligue 1 game in the 21st century.

Lacazette and Wahi joined Carlos Bianchi of Reims and Dello Onis of Monaco as the only players to have scored at least four goals in a single game for opposing teams after the latter pair did so in an 8-4 spectacle between Rems and Monaco in 1975.

Lacazette now tops the scorer’s chart with 24 goals, while Wahi has now scored 17 goals and could break Olivier Giroud’s record of the most goals in a Ligue 1 season by a Monpellier player, which stands at 21.
