The amber severe wind warning issued by the Met Office, with predicted gusts of up to 70mph, posed significant risks to safety in the local area.

"Due to the risk to safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts, and an amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today's fixture should be postponed on safety grounds," Everton confirmed in a statement via Reuters.

Liverpool also released a statement acknowledging the disappointment, stating that prioritising safety is very important.

"We appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, but the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance," the club said via Reuters.

The postponement marks the first time a Premier League match has been called off due to weather conditions this season. Both clubs will now await a rescheduled date for the fixture.

Liverpool's next match will be a Champions League clash against Girona, while Everton will face Arsenal in the Premier League.
