The Special One was unable to better Manchester United's result against Twente in the Europa League
Fenerbahce made it one win from their last four European encounters as they stumbled to a 1-1 draw away to FC Twente in their second Europa League match.
After claiming a win in their opening Europa League game against Union Saint-Gilloise, Fenerbahce were unable to repeat the feat against Eredivisie side Twente.
Duan Tadic’s second-half goal was enough to cancel out Michel Vlap’s opener for Twente and earn Fenerbahce a point in the Netherlands, in what would have been seen as a disappointing result.
How it happened
Encouraged by their most recent Europa League result, a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, Twente started strongly, with Michel Vlap forcing two early saves from Fenerbahçe’s Dominik Livakovic, who was crucial in keeping the scores level.
As the half wore on, Fenerbahce grew into the game, nearly taking the lead when Jayden Oosterwolde hit the crossbar for the visitors.
However, it was Twente who broke the deadlock before the half-hour mark when Youri Regeer’s lofted cross was met by Vlap's clever header. Riding that momentum, Twente nearly doubled their lead, but Livakovc again denied Regeer’s powerful shot.
The second half started similarly to the first, with Livakovic saving a low effort from Mitchell van Bergen to keep Fenerbahce in the game.
Twente’s missed chances came back to haunt them midway through the second half when Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat’s sent a brilliant pass through the hosts’ defence, allowing Tadic to lob the on-rushing Twente goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
Both teams pushed for a late winner, with Lammers nearly snatching victory for Twente, but Livakovic once again stood firm to earn his side a hard-fought point. .
