The Three Lions looked to be heading for a shock exit when the Swiss broke the deadlock in the 75th minute through Breel Embolo. The striker poked home at the far post after a clever deflected cross, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance.
However, just five minutes later, England were level thanks to a moment of magic from Bukayo Saka.
The 22-year-old cut in from the right-hand side and unleashed a ferocious long-range drive that flew into the top corner, leaving Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer with no chance.
Saka's stunning equaliser means he is now the youngest player to score for the Three Lions in a EURO quarter-final, surpassing Michael Owen's previous record.
That goal ensured this quarter-final tie would require extra time, the second time in this tournament that a last-eight clash has gone all the way.
It remained all square after the additional 30 minutes, setting the stage for a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.
With the scores at 4-3, upstepped Trent Alexander-Arnold to coolly slot home the winning penalty and send the travelling England fans into raptures.
Gareth Southgate's men have had to do it the hard way, surviving two nail-biting penalty shootouts to make it to the final four.
But their spirit and determination have shone through, and they will now fancy their chances of going all the way and lifting the trophy.
As for the Swiss, they can hold their heads high after another impressive tournament display. Murat Yakin's side pushed the favourites all the way and will be devastated to exit on penalties. But they can be proud of their efforts.
England march on, with a semi-final clash against either Netherlands or Turkiye up next.
