Euro 2024: Germany breeze past Scotland with ease in opening game

Stephen Oladehinde 21:57 - 14.06.2024

The Euro 2024 tournament started with Germany thrashing Scotland in the opening match of the competition.

The host country opened the campaign perfectly, leaving the Scottish side helpless all through the game.

Three first-half goals and a straight red card sealed the fate of Steve Clark's team as they suffered a 5-1 defeat in the opening game.

As it happened

The host country, Germany, begins their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland with a solid starting 11.

Champions League winner Toni Kroos starts in midfield, with Kai Havertz leading the attack and Ilkay Gundogan captaining the team.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke started McTominay and McGinn in midfield, with Adams leading the attack and Andy Robertson captaining the side.

Germany started the game in blistering fashion and got the first goal of the Euro 2024 tournament with a nice passage of play.

Joshua Kimmich picked up a long pass from Toni Kroos and played a squared pass for Florian Wirtz, who was all alone as he took a shot that beat Angus Gunn.

The German machine kept on pushing and doubled their lead after a brilliant pass from Gundogan to Havertz, who pulled the ball back to Musiala, and the forward hit a ferocious strike into the net.

Scotland looked miserable as Germany dominated the game and got the third goal from the penalty spot.

Angus Gunn made a sharp save from Ilkay Gundogan's header, and it looked like the Germany captain was going to score the rebound before Ryan Porteous brought him down in the box.

The defender was given a red card and a penalty awarded to Germany, which was coolly converted by Havertz before halftime.

The second half started just as the first half did and killed every hope of a comeback from Scotland with a fourth goal.

Niclas Fullkrug benefited from a counterattack and hit a wonderful shot into the top corner of the net from 18 yards.

Scotland scored a consolation goal despite having a man down. Scott McKenna nodded the ball on from a deep free-kick, and it pinged off the head of Antonio Rudiger to whizz past Manuel Neuer.

Just a few minutes after conceding from a free kick, Germany got the fifth goal from a wonderful strike from Emre Can right outside the box.

The game ended with Germany kicking off the campaign with a solid win against Scotland, with three points in the bag.
