Red Devils head coach Erik Ten Hag has spoken about the pressure surrounding Marcus Rashford

Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday was a much-needed boost for Erik ten Hag and his squad.

Amidst the celebrations, the spotlight fell on Marcus Rashford, whose goal marked his first Premier League strike since March. Ten Hag used the opportunity to defend the forward against recent criticism.

Rashford had faced scrutiny following a tough performance against Liverpool, but Ten Hag was quick to highlight the forward’s contributions. "We don’t pay attention to external criticism," Ten Hag stated. "Marcus was unfairly targeted after the Liverpool game. He created two clear chances and has been performing well. His goal against Southampton is a testament to his hard work and dedication. At his age, his goal tally is impressive, and I’m confident he will score many more."

With upcoming fixtures against Barnsley in the League Cup and Crystal Palace in the league, United will hope to build on this positive result.

Meanwhile speaking to BT Sport after the game, Matthijs de Ligt provided reassurance about his fitness after the Southampton game.

The Dutch defender had to be substituted just before the final whistle due to cramp, raising concerns among fans.

However, De Ligt clarified that the issue was minor. "It was just cramp," he explained. "It’s the first time in months I’ve played three games in a week, so it’s a good sign of my fitness. I wanted to finish the game but had to come off."

With Rashford finding his form and De Ligt recovering well, Manchester United looks set to build on their recent success and tackle the challenges ahead with renewed confidence.
