Swiss club FC Zurich have announced the signing of little-known Nigerian attacker Umeh Emmanuel, marking a significant addition to their squad ahead of the new season. 

The young wing player joins the Swiss club from Botev Plovdiv in Bulgaria, having agreed to a five-year contract that will keep him at Zurich until 2029.

But what else do you know about the talented forward? Here are five things you need to know about him.

The latest Nigeria sensation is an attacker who was born on August 31, 2004, making him 19 years old.

Umeh has taken the next step in his career after putting pen to paper on a five-year contract that will see him play in a league where Liverpool legend, Mohamed Salah, rated amongst the best Muslim players, kicked off his European journey.

His addition to Zurich brings youth and potential to the Swiss club looking to push for the title this season after last season’s fourth-place finish.

Impressive Bulgarian Stint

During his time with Botev Plovdiv, Nigeria’s Emmanuel demonstrated his goal-scoring and playmaking abilities. 

In 47 competitive appearances, he netted 11 goals and provided three assists, showcasing his potential as a dynamic attacking threat.

His contributions were instrumental in Plovdiv's success, culminating in their Bulgarian Cup victory in the 2023/2024 season. 

His impact was particularly notable in the final, where he scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 win against Ludogorets Razgrad.

International Experience

The young Nigerian's talent has not gone unnoticed at the international level, where he has already represented Nigeria. 

He has featured for Nigeria's U20 national team, known as the Flying Eagles, on five occasions and was a part of the team that thrashed hosts Argentina in 2023.

This international experience is likely to prove valuable as he adapts to the challenges of Swiss football at Zurich.

European Journey

Umeh's journey to Zurich is a testament to his rapid and impressive development in European football.

After initially training in his native Nigeria, he began his European career in Russia with FDC Vista Gelendzhik. 

In October 2022, Emmanuel made a move to Botev Plovdiv in Bulgaria, where he quickly established himself as a key player.

Umeh’s High Expectations

Zurich's acquisition of Emmanuel represents a strategic move to bolster their attacking options with a young, promising talent. 

The club has expressed enthusiasm about working with Emmanuel and have high hopes for his success during his time in Zurich.

While the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, the length of Emmanuel's contract suggests that FC Zurich sees him as a long-term investment.

Meanwhile, just a few days after he was unveiled as a new player, the youngster appears to have wasted no time in settling in and making his mark.

Zurich made the ideal start to their new season with a 2-0 win over Yverdon, with Nigerian youngster Umeh and fellow newcomer Juan José Perea finding the back of the net for the Swiss club in front of 2,900 spectators.

After Perea’s 74th-minute breakthrough, on the occasion of his debut, Umeh put the icing on the cake for FC Zurich in stoppage time, firing home a low shot to seal a 2-0 victory.
