Kenyan star Duncan Otieno and Gaborone United seek redemption after a draw, minus suspended players, in their 2023/24 season.

Kenyan international Duncan Otieno is gearing up for a pivotal role as his Botswana Premier League side, Gaborone United, seeks their maiden victory of the 2023/24 season.

Set to face Morupule Wanderers under the floodlights at the National Stadium on Wednesday night, Coach Pontsho Piro Moloi exudes confidence in his squad's ability to bounce back from a lackluster season opener against Nico United.

In their initial outing on October 7, the Reds had to settle for a goalless draw on the road, leaving Moloi keen to see his charges hit the ground running against their historically challenging opponents, Morupule Wanderers.

Despite the early stumble, Moloi remains optimistic, stating, "The preparations have gone well, and we have to go all out to win the game. Morupule Wanderers always give us a tough time, and we are looking forward to an exciting game. I am happy that the players who were injured [and missed Nico United game] have recovered."

One of the challenges facing Gaborone United is the disruption caused by the international break immediately following the season opener.

"It's disappointing because it breaks the momentum. The only positive is that we have our players back from injury," he noted.

The stoppage in play due to international commitments can indeed be a double-edged sword, providing rest for recovering players but disrupting the team's rhythm.

However, the team will have to navigate the upcoming fixture without two key players—central defender Kennedy Amutenya and striker Onkabetse Makgantai.

Both have been suspended by the club until further notice due to disciplinary issues. Gaborone United, known for its stringent stance against any form of indiscipline, is sending a clear message that adherence to the club's values is non-negotiable, regardless of the players' stature within the squad.

As the spotlight falls on Duncan Otieno, the Kenyan international is expected to play a crucial role in anchoring Gaborone United's defence and dictating the tempo of the game.

His experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable, especially in the absence of suspended teammates.

Otieno's ability to link up play and provide defensive stability will be vital in nullifying Morupule Wanderers' threats and initiating attacking moves for Gaborone United.
