‘Does not make sense’ - Victor Wanyama slams one key issue killing morale of local players

The former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama wants FKF to immediately look into the matter as he feels it is killing the motivation of local-based players.

Former Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama has decried the low amounts of money offered as prizes in the FKF Premier League, something he wants the new administration to address.

Wanyama feels players are getting shortchanged by the little financial incentive on offer as he does not believe it is enough motivation for the toil they put in as well as what clubs invest for an entire campaign.

Kenyan league champions have been receiving Ksh5 million with Gor Mahia, who have won the last two titles, not receiving anything from the federation for their league crown in 2022-23.

Wanyama therefore is calling on the Hussein Mohammed-led Football Kenya Federation to professionalise the league and increase the prize money while also ensuring that clubs receive a substantial sum in grants.

“What they should do now is embrace professionalism and also make changes in our league, including increasing the prize money,” Wanyama told Sports Eye during a football tournament in honour of the late footballer Ezekiel Otuoma.

“I believe this will be done because the people who have taken over the federation are very professional and experienced, so we are expecting big things.

“The prize money in the FKF Premier League does not make sense. Teams spend so much that it doesn’t match the prize.

“I have also heard that increasing the prize money is one of the first things they want to do. There will also be increased money disbursed to teams from broadcasting deals,” he added.

The Kenyan league has fallen behind its regional rivals in terms of prize money offered, with the Tanzanian league attracting $250,000 (Ksh32.4 million) for its winners, while $250,000 (Ksh32.4 million) goes to Ethiopian Premier League champions.

However, this is largely down to the sponsorships the leagues attract and there is hope that the new FKF office can lure more corporates into the game so that the financial rewards increase.
