Divock Origi: The one that got away — Why Kenya still feels the loss

Divock Origi opted against playing for Kenya in 2014 but how has his decision impacted on Michael Olunga?

Several players would have had the opportunity to play for Harambee Stars had they made the decision to don the national colours.

Divock Origi (Belgium), Philip Mwene (Austria), Martin Olsson (Sweden), Awer Mabil (Australia) and Marcus Olsson (Sweden) were all eligible to play for Harambee Stars had they expressed an interest.

However, Divock Origi's decision to snub Harambee Stars is still hurting the national team, considering that Michael Olunga is the only proven goalscorer with international experience and pedigree to deliver for the Stars.

The Football Kenya Federation expressed an interest in persuading Origi to play for the Kenya senior national team. However, on May 13,  2014, Belgium senior national team manager Marc Wilmots announced Origi would be part of the 23-man squad representing Belgium at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, dashing Kenya's hopes.

Origi is almost 30, the same age as Michael Olunga. While Olunga is a starter at Al Duhail, Origi's career at AC Milan has nosedived after he was told to look for a club but failed to secure a move away from the San Siro. Origi currently trains with and is listed in the squad of Milan Futuro.

But what might have happened had Origi opted to play for Harambee Stars?  Since 2014, Origi has made 32 appearances for Belgium and scored just three goals.

Olunga made his Harambee stars bow in 2015 but in 65 appearances he boasts of 32 goals. Olunga is four goals away from becoming the all-time top-scorer.

Origi has had limited playing time with Belgium because of the presence of Romelu Lukaku and Michy Batshuayi. Mostly, he has been used off the bench. Divock Origi last played for the Belgian national team on November 18, 2022, in a friendly match against Wales.

Origi is the sort of striker with quick feet and dribbling skills that would have thrived especially under current Stars coach Benni McCarthy.

Mercy Aero, an ardent Harambee Stars die-hard expressed regret that Origi opted against representing Harambee Stars. "For me, I think it is sad that Divock Origi snubbed our beloved country in favor of Belgium. What a ombination could that have been, if he had played with Michael Olunga?"

Born to Mike Origi, a former Harambee Stars striker, and Linda Adhiambo, Origi had both Kenyan parents. Origi was born in the city of Ostend, Belgium, making him a citizen by birth. He grew up in both Kenya and Belgium but chose to represent the latter on the international stage.

While Jonah Ayunga, Masud Juma and  John Avire have all been Longa's backups, none has really impressed to the extent of threatening to displace the Harambee Stars captain from the starting lineup.
