The Harambee Stars goalkeeper is preparing to join Polokwane City with his contract at Tusker nearing its end.

Tusker FC goalkeeper Brian Bwire is waiting for the official release documents from the club in order to finalise his free transfer to South African Premier Soccer League side Polokwane City FC.

Bwire, whose contract expires in a month, has decided not to renew his stay with the Brewers after three seasons, marking his first venture outside Kenya in his career.

Sources close to the player have confirmed that Bwire, who has earned one cap for Harambee Stars since his debut in 2021, is only waiting for Tusker FC to officially release him to join Polokwane.

“The deal is done but we are only waiting on Tusker to officially release him so he can enjoy his new venture in South Africa,” the source, granted anonymity to protect relationships, told Pulse Sports.

According to Article 4 of FIFA regulation rules, a player is obligated to agree on terms with a new club if his contract is six months away from expiry or less.

The regulation states, “A club intending to conclude a contract with a professional must inform the player’s current club in writing before entering into negotiations with him."

“A professional shall only be free to conclude a contract with another club if his contract with his present club has expired or is due to expire within six months. Any breach of this provision shall be subject to appropriate sanctions.”

With his contract expiring, Bwire is now within his rights to conclude a deal with Polokwane. Known for his ball-playing capabilities, it will go in line with the club vision of instigating moves from behind.

The 24-year-old, an alumnus of Kakamega High School, began his career with Kariobangi Sharks in 2017.

After four seasons with Sharks, he joined Tusker FC in 2021 as the club was gearing up for their CAF Champions League campaign. Initially an understudy to Patrick Matasi, Bwire became the first-choice keeper after Matasi's departure to Kenya Police last year. He was also named among the club’s assistant captains.

Bwire struggled for form for part of last season, losing his place to Brian Opondo at some point, but won it back before the end of the season.

He managed to keep the second most clean sheets in the FKFPL last season. Bwire is represented by Liken Sports Management, the agency that also represents Kenyan internationals Matasi, Abdallah Hassan, and David Ochieng.

Polokwane City FC was established in 2012 after the owners of Bay United sold the franchise to the Mogaladi family.

Initially playing in various temporary venues, the club officially relocated from Port Elizabeth to Polokwane City. Based in Polokwane, Limpopo province, the team plays its home matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
