Dessers scored early in the first half to help Cremonese to victory over Empoli
A superb week for Nigerian strikers continues as Cremonese forward Cyriel Dessers’ goal in the fourth minute gave them victory over Empoli in Serie A to revive their hopes of staying in the Serie A beyond this season.
Cremonese beat Empoli with Dessers the hero
Dessers’ first Serie A goal since his brace against Sassuolo last month saw the strugglers claim a rare win as they get used to the feeling of winning in the league.
Before the sides could properly settle into their routines, Desserts was on hand to finish from full-back, Leonardo Sernicola’s cross to give Cremonese the lead at home to Empoli.
Despite being notorious for conceding goals and having the worst defence in Serie A this season, Cremonese were able to hold on to the lead for the rest of the game including seven grueling minutes of second half extra time.
Dessers and Cremonese looking to avoid relegation
Cremonese did not win in the 2022/23 Serie A season until February, but they have now claimed three wins in seven games since then as they look to avoid the drop after being nailed on to play Serie B football next season.
Dessers has had a decent season despite Cremonese’s struggles, scoring 10 goals and assisting three more in 29 games for the Italian side, despite starting only 19 of those games.
Even after the win, Cremonese are still in the relegation zone, but are 19th, one place above Sampdoria which is an improvement after spending the majority of the 2022/23 season at the bottom of the table.
They have now amassed 19 points this season, but are still six points behind Spezia in 17th and have a mountain to climb to escape getting relegated.
