Dennis Oliech explains who Kenya should consider as Harambee Stars coach

Turkish gaffer Engin Firat has been unconvincing in the three years at the helm and Harambee Stars legend Dennis Oliech wants Kenya to go a different direction.

Harambee Star legend Dennis Oliech believes the hiring of a local coach is crucial if Kenya hopes to dine with the big boys in continental and global football.

His sentiments come in the wake of Harambee Stars' failed bid to book an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ticket for the Morocco showpiece next year.

The 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe proved detrimental to the team's AFCON chances. Stars needed to beat Zimbabwe and win their remaining tie against Namibia on November 19 but will now watch Afria's premier competition from home.

The former Stars skipper, who scored 34 goals in 76 appearances in 13 years to become Kenya's second best scorer of all-time, said Engin Firat and his entire technical bench must be shown the door. After three years at the helm, Firat's appointment raised hope that he was the right man for the hot seat but has largely been unconvincing.

"The technical bench should be disbanded. We have seen the team report to camp on time and enjoy good build-up and treatment to matches only to lose. We have given Firat time but the results have not been coming by. I think it's time we trusted a local coach again," Oliech told SportsBoom.

Oliech believes the local tactician will be up to the task but needs support and patience similar to the one afforded to Stars' Turkish gaffer whose future hangs in the balance. " We have to hire a local coach in time and give him the support and patience Firat has enjoyed," added Oliech.
