The Cameroonian goalkeeper pulled off a magnificent penalty save to help Manchester United claim three points
Manchester United made the perfect return from the international break with a 3-0 win over a resilient 10-man Southampton.
Onana’s penalty save, along with goals for Matthijs De Ligt, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho helped the Red Devils to a win over Southampton who had Jack Stephens sent off.
How it happened
The Red Devils had Andre Onana to thank for keeping them in the game after the Cameroonian goalkeeper kept out a penalty by Cameron Archer to keep the score at 0-0 in the first half.
Just two minutes after Onana’s save, Manchester United took the lead as De Ligt scored his first goal for the Red Devils following a summer move from Bayern Munich.
Manchester United then took advantage of Southampton’s drop in morale to double their lead as Rashford scored to make it 2-0 to the visitors.
The goal was Rashford’s first goal of the new season and ended a run of 12 games without scoring for the England forward.
After taking a commanding 2-0 lead into the half-time break, the Red Devils dominated the second period and got another advantage as Southampton’s Jack Stephens received his marching orders for a nasty foul.
Substitute Alejandro Garnacho then struck with the last kick of the game to put the cherry on top in the 3-0 win for the Red Devils.
