Spurs defender Djed Spence has identified his pathway to the England national team setup, picking out the benchmark player he hopes to emulate.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence remains determined to earn a place in the England national team, despite being overlooked in recent squad selections.

The full-back has been in impressive form this season for club but has yet to receive a senior call-up for the Three Lions.

During the most recent March international break, Arsenal youngster Miles Lewis-Skelly was chosen ahead of Spence in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

However, the Spurs fullback remains steadfast in his ambitions, outlining his pathway to an international debut.

“I just want to keep establishing myself, play for my country as well,” Spence said on an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents show on YouTube.

“That’s another thing that I want to do. To achieve that, I just have to keep improving and stay focused," he added.

Following Spence’s remarks, his host, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, asked him about players who have set the standard he aspires to emulate.

“Now you mentioned it, England, yeah. Because I see you playing, and at the moment, you're playing as well as anybody in the league. And you're not even playing in your normal position. Who are the other fullbacks that you go, ‘You know what? That’s the standard’?” asked Ferdinand.

“I always looked at Kyle Walker, to be fair,” Spence responded. “You know, what a player, phenomenal player, what he’s done in the game. For me, the best right-back in Premier League history," replied Spence.

Walker, a former Manchester City right-back, was once in a similar position to Spence, playing for Tottenham while trying to break into the England squad.

He eventually secured a spot and became the first-choice right-back under former England manager Gareth Southgate.

With his international future still uncertain, Spence will hope to replicate Walker’s career trajectory and establish himself in the England setup.

Spence's continued strong performances for Tottenham could make it increasingly difficult for the national team selectors to ignore him in upcoming call-ups.
