Jamie Carragher, in his Telegraph Column, claimed that Declan Rice has the potential to rise through the ranks to become one of England’s greatest midfielders.

During his time at Manchester United, Roy Keane played as a midfielder but scored a total of 33 goals in the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher revealed that Declan Rice has always faced criticism for not scoring goals but his performance for Arsenal against Real Madrid was a testimony of what he can produce going forward.

“I have always said Rice has the potential to be the great English midfielder of his generation, and he showed why,” Carragher wrote.

“He does not play in the same attacking midfield position as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in their prime. To me, Rice has always been more of a Roy Keane, who scored 57 across his 473 senior club games.

“If Arsenal go through, Rice’s contribution over both legs will rightly be as revered by his supporters as much as Keane’s for United against Juventus in 1999.”

Aside from fans and football legends being surprised, Declan Rice also admitted that he never expected to produce such a world-class display against Real Madrid.

In all his football matches as a professional, Declan Rice had never scored a direct free-kick, and then he managed to achieve the record in 12 minutes.

“I don't know if it will ever sink in. My phone has gone crazy. To score the first and second, I fancied both and to have the confidence... I am a bit speechless, it is a nice bit of history to beat Madrid,” Declan Rice said as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“The manager just said, with the individual quality they have, it is scary and special things happen at the Bernabeu. We are not going to defend, we are going to attack and we want to be in the semis. No messages from David Beckham, I'm not lucky enough to have his number. But I am so happy.”

His stunning brace against Real Madrid not only silenced his critics but also solidified his place among England’s rising midfield greats, and as Arsenal heads into the decisive second leg on Thursday, April 17, all eyes will be on him to deliver yet another masterclass.
