Ex-Barcelona full-back Dani Alves was arrested today over rape allegations, prompting his club Pumas UNAM to terminate his contract.

Dani Alves' contract has been terminated by Mexican club Pumas, as announced by club president Leopoldo Silva, following rape allegations that have now seen the player arrested and detained without bail by Spanish police.

Leopoldo Silva, the president of Mexican outfit Pumas that Dani Alves now plays for, has released a statement announcing the termination of the Brazilians contract, in dissociating his club from the player's alleged conduct.

"With this decision, the club reiterates its promise not to tolerate acts by any member of our institution that violate the spirit of the institution and its values," Leopoldo Silva said per Marca.

“The Universidad Nacional Club is an institution that promotes respect and integrity and upstanding behaviour on and off the field, of its players because they are a role model in society, in Mexico and elsewhere in the world.

“we cannot allow the conduct of one person to damage our philosophy that has always been exemplary in the training and development of young athletes in our country."

The league themselves issued a statement on the case:

"Liga MX, in conjunction with Club Universidad Nacional (Pumas), will be pending the case and the legal situation of the player to determine what is appropriate in terms of his participation in the league," they announced.

The case against Dani Alves

Dani Alves was arrested today in Barcelona for allegedly raping a woman in a nightclub bathroom on December 30.

The 39-year-old remains remanded in prison without bail as the judge considers him a high-flight risk due to his financial might and because he currently lives outside of Spain.
