Kenya had finished second in group B on Tuesday, but their fate was not in their hands, as both Namibia and Angola won their ties in group C to seal the remaining semi-final spots.

Kenya’s Emerging Stars have been eliminated from the 2024 COSAFA Cup despite a strong performance that saw them finish second in Group B with six points.

This outcome followed the qualification of Namibia and Angola for the semi-finals, with both teams finishing atop the group standings. Mozambique and Comoros had already sealed semi final spots a day earlier.

Namibia topped Group B with seven points and a goal difference of four. Angola also amassed seven points, securing their spot as the best second-placed team in the tournament. This left Kenya, who had hoped to advance further, out of the running despite their commendable efforts.

Reflecting on their tournament journey, Kenya can take pride in their performances. The team secured victories against Zambia and Zimbabwe, showcasing their potential and resilience. However, a crucial loss to Comoros proved to be their undoing.

In that match, Kenya played with ten men for most of the game after Paul Ochuoga received a second yellow card for a clumsy foul in his own box, leading to his dismissal.

The primary aim for Kenya in this tournament was to identify players capable of stepping up to the senior national team. With the majority of the squad consisting of U-23 players, the focus was on development and gaining valuable experience on the international stage.

Kenya was one of the invited teams in the COSAFA Cup, which featured 12 teams. The tournament's format allowed for the three group winners and the best second-placed team to advance to the semi-finals.

Despite their elimination, Kenya's young squad gained significant exposure and demonstrated their potential.

The team's victories against Zambia and Zimbabwe highlighted their capability and determination. These wins were particularly impressive given the competitive nature of the tournament and the quality of the opposition.

The players showed their readiness to compete at higher levels, which bodes well for the future of Kenyan football.

The match against Comoros was a turning point. Playing with a man down for the majority of the game, Kenya struggled to maintain their form and eventually succumbed to their only defeat of the tournament.

Despite this setback, the experience gained from such high-pressure situations is invaluable for the young players.
