The Argentina captain appeared to sustain a muscle injury against Chile.

Lionel Messi could not allay fears about a possible hamstring injury after Argentina’s Copa America clash with Chile.

What happened?

The 2022 World Cup-winning captain had to receive treatment during the Albiceleste’s feisty 1-0 triumph against the Chileans, leading to fears he has sustained an injury.

Lautaro Martinez netted an 88th-minute winner to seal qualification for the defending Copa America champions as Lionel Scaloni’s men remain perfect in their chase for consecutive titles.

However, Messi’s situation has sparked concerns about his fitness.

What Messi said

The Inter Miami star revealed he struggled with the injury from the off despite playing 90 minutes.

“I felt some discomfort in my right hamstring at the beginning of the game,” he told reporters after the physical encounter.

“It was tight. It wasn’t as loose as it should’ve been. But I was able to finish the game. We’ll see how it goes.”

What comes next?

Scaloni’s men complete their Group A schedule against Peru on June 30.

With qualification assured and first place effectively secured, the Argentina coach could rest Messi for that final group-stage fixture.
