Mohamed Salah has just over six months until the end of his Liverpool contract but continues to show why the Reds must give him a new contract

Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah proved his worth to Liverpool once again with the winning goal as the Reds triumphed 1-0 away to Girona in the UEFA Champions League.

Salah put any worries about his future at the club behind him to tuck away a second-half penalty to give Liverpool a deserved win that sees them remain at the top of the Champions League table, with six wins from six matches.

Liverpool were on top of their opponents for most of the game, but needed Salah’s decisive kick after Luis Diaz had been fouled in the box as well as a handful of heroic saves from the returning Alisson Becker to maintain their perfect Champions League record.

How it happened

The Reds nearly scored early through Virgil van Dijk, but Girona's Paulo Gazzaniga tipped his header over. Girona threatened with chances from Alejandro Frances and Bryan Gil, but Alisson's heroics kept them at bay.

In a frenetic first half, Darwin Nunez missed opportunities, while Alisson denied Yaser Asprilla's swerving effort.

After the break, Alisson continued to shine, saving from Arnaut Danjuma before Liverpool broke the deadlock after VAR awarded a penalty for Donny van de Beek's foul on Luis Diaz, with Salah converting.

Despite their lead, Liverpool struggled and Trent Alexander-Arnold's late free-kick was denied, ensuring a narrow win that flattered the Premier League leaders against a spirited Girona side.
