The fantastic duo were in their element in the Football League, leading their respective clubs to important wins before switching focus to the Super Eagles 2026 World Cup qualifiers, WCQ.

Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, masterminds Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, the Super Eagles’ dynamic assistant coaching duo, were in top form at the weekend.

The duo steered their clubs to emphatic victories before jetting off to join the national team for a make-or-break 2026 World Cup Qualifier (WCQ) clash against Rwanda.

First up, on Saturday, Ilechukwu’s Enugu Rangers turned the Cathedral in Enugu into a fortress, dismantling Kwara United with a 3-0 thrashing.

The Flying Antelopes took flight early, with Chiedozie Okorie and Isaac Savior striking in the first half to set the tone.

Frank Uwumiro sealed the deal after the break, ensuring Rangers stay hot on the heels of a CAF Champions League spot, just four points shy of second-placed Rivers United with nine games left.

For Ilechukwu, the defending NPFL champion after last season’s victory, it was another feather in his cap as he keeps his squad soaring.

Then, on Sunday, Ogunmodede’s Remo Stars kept their iron grip on the NPFL summit with a slick 2-0 win over Emmanuel Amunike’s Heartland FC in Ikenne.

Olamilekan Adebayo opened the scoring in the first half, and Samson Olasupo put the game to bed after the interval, handing the Sky Blues a routine victory.

The result kept Remo’s lead at eight points over Finidi George’s Rivers United, keeping Ogunmodede’s dream of a maiden league title firmly on track.

The coaching comrades, who share a tight bond off the pitch, swapped their club tracksuits for national team duties without missing a beat.

Remo Stars remain 8 points clear at the top.

By Monday morning, Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu were among the first to touch down in Kigali, Rwanda, linking up with the Super Eagles ahead of Friday’s pivotal WCQ showdown at the Amahoro Stadium.

With Nigeria languishing fifth in Group C after just three points from four matches, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Only victories will do to revive their World Cup hopes.

Fresh off their NPFL heroics, the duo’s winning mojo could be just what Eric Chelle’s squad needs.

From Ikenne to Enugu to Kigali, Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu are proving they’re a force to be reckoned with, on club turf and now, they hope, on the international stage.
