Miheso, who is currently part of the Harambee Stas setup, has revealed why it is important AFC Leopards maintain their perfect start to the season following their 4-0 win over Mathare United.
AFC Leopards captain Clifton Miheso has emphasized the critical importance of maintaining the momentum from their impressive 4-0 victory over Mathare United in their season opener at Dandora Stadium.
The comprehensive win in the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) has ignited hopes for a successful campaign, especially as the club looks to break a 26-year drought without a league title and end a six-year trophy-less spell since their FKF Cup triumph in 2017 under Robert Matano.
Reflecting on last season's struggles, Miheso pointed out that a poor start had derailed their campaign, leading to the dismissal of Tom Juma after a winless streak in the first seven matches.
The reappointment of Thomas Trucha eventually stabilized the team, guiding them to a fifth-place finish, but the captain insists that this season requires a different approach.
"Last season, we never started well. We had a rocky start. Our aim is to start well this season and make up for the ones we fumbled last season," Miheso said.
"If we start well and we pick up from there, we have a chance of winning the league. We had a good preseason, the intensity has been amazing, the coach has pushed us through the trainings."
AFC Leopards, who prepared for the season with a pre-season camp in Mumias and a friendly match in Uganda, have shown signs of being a rejuvenated side.
Miheso credits the rigorous pre-season sessions for the team's newfound identity and refined style of play.
"We have had the endurance, tactical, and technical sessions, and the team is looking really good. We were unbeaten in pre-season, which shows that we have had good preparations, and carrying that form into the league, we will be able to win the title."
The captain also praised his teammates for the strong camaraderie they have built over the last 10 months, a factor he believes has been crucial in turning their fortunes around since the start of the year.
"I want to thank them for last season because we were together as a team and showed good character on and off the pitch. We were a family, and I want us to continue like that because there are great things we will achieve together as a team and for the coming season as well."
Miheso, who stepped into the captaincy role following the departure of Washington Munene, expressed his commitment to fostering unity and providing the necessary leadership as the team embarks on its quest for league glory.
"My work as captain is to bring the players together and push them and provide the leadership required. I need to be there for them and ensure we work hard as a team to win the Premier League," he affirmed.
