AFC Leopards captain Cliffton Miheso has given his opinion on what the team needs to end their 26-year Premier League title drought.

AFC Leopards captain Cliffton Miheso feels Ingwe can be among the Premier League title contenders if they have a good start in the new season.

Leopards endured a torrid start to their 2023-24 campaign when their first win arrived in October after spending several weeks hovering around the relegation places but a major turnaround in the second leg helped them to a fifth-place finish.

Miheso agrees they cannot afford another poor start if they want to challenge for trophies but has backed coach Tomas Trucha’s charges to turn their fortunes around this time.

“That was not really good for our team. Hopefully this season because we started well with pre-season with the coaches and have had good intense training so hopefully this season, we will have a good start because that is what we did not have last season,” said Miheso.

“It is our target to really have a good start so that we can have a chance for the league.

“This is the fourth week and we have had good training and squad. We have signed good experienced players who are going to help us and hopefully, they are going to add some strength to the team and going to Uganda, Express is a good team so it is a good chance to see where we are."

While champions Gor Mahia, Tusker and Kenya Police are seen as the contenders for the title, Miheso says Leopards’ pedigree means they cannot be ruled out from the race.

“AFC Leopards is a big club and every season, they should always challenge for the league and available trophies,” he added.

“This season is still the same because we are a big team and going to challenge for every trophy that is there and my call to fans is to continue supporting us.”

Leopards will take on Ugandan Premier League side Express FC in a friendly match in Friday ahead of their FKF Premier League season opener against Mathare United on August 24.
