Akpom shines again
After a shaky start to life in the Netherlands, the 28-year-old has settled in and started to show his quality.
The England-born star earned his second start of the and ninth overall and celebrated with a well-taken goal for the resurgent Ajax.
With the Amsterdamers leading 3-0 thanks to first-half strikes from 17-year-old Jorrel Hato, Kristian Hlynsson, and Diminik Oroz, who scored an own goal in the second, Akpom’s moment arrived.
The striker was at the right spot and time to head home Ajax’s fourth of the day for his second goal in as many matches.
It was also his fifth goal of the season in nine matches in the Eredivisie before Kenneth Taylor wrapped up the show with the fifth.
Super Eagles message
Akpom’s latest performance could be seen as another message to national team selectors in the Super Eagles.
The forward who is eligible to play for Nigeria continues to show his ability at Ajax following a summer move from Middlesbrough in the summer.
His goal and display are a reminder of the quality the versatile forward can offer the Super Eagles as Nigeria looks to book a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Akpom and Ajax, with the latest result, have now moved from relegation to European spot, eighth on the standings.
