After getting sent off against Aston Villa, Chelsea's Malo Gusto will be relieved to know he is still in good company
Chelsea new boy Malo Gusto endured a torrid afternoon of Premier League football after getting sent off for the first time in his Premier League career during the Blues’ embarrassing home loss.
Chelsea’s Gusto sent off during Aston Villa loss
Gusto had impressed in his first few games for Chelsea after replacing injured club captain Reece James, who suffered an injury in the opening game of the season against Liverpool, but was sent off against Aston Villa to dent his burgeoning image at the club.
The French wing-back received his marching orders against Aston Villa after a VAR review of a challenge on defender Lucas Digne deemed the tackle over the top, leaving referee Jarred Gillett with no other option but to send the Chelsea man off in the first half.
Gusto’s early shower put his team in jeopardy but also put the defender alongside one of Chelsea’s icons, Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel, in an unwanted way as he became one of the youngest players in the club’s history to get sent off.
Gusto joins Mikel in unwanted milestone
At the age of only 20 years and 128 days, Gusto became the third-youngest player in Chelsea history to get sent off behind only Robert Huth, who was 19 years and 264 days old, and Obi, who was 19 years and 175 days old when they received red cards for the first time in Blue.
Huth received his first red card for Chelsea against Manchester United, while Obi was sent off for the first time against Reading in 2006.
In Gusto’s absence, Chelsea succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, their third loss this campaign, which leaves them languishing in 14th place on five points from their opening six Premier League matches.
The straight red card means that Gusto will likely miss Chelsea’s next EFL Cup tie against Brighton, as well as two Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Burnley.
