With Chelsea sinking into the wrong half of the Premier League table, the decision was made to part ways with Potter and his departure set a new Premier League record for the most in-season managerial changes in one Premier League campaign.
Potter's sack sets new Premier League record
Potter was the 13th Premier League manager to leave his post in the 2022/23 season, and his Chelsea departure meant that this season has seen three more managerial changes than any other season in the league’s history.
A worrying trend of over-expectation and under-delivery from managers in the Premier League appears to have plagued the league in recent years with the top four seasons featuring the most managerial departures all coming in seasons between 2013/14 and now.
The 2013/14 season, the 2017/18 season, and the most recently concluded season, 2021/22 all saw a decade of departures but still pale to the 13 of the 2022/23 season.
