CHAN 2024: Record prize money in wait for winners of delayed tournament set to be hosted in Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania

Winners of the delayed CHAN 2024 tournament are in for a major treat after CAF increased the prize money by a whooping 75 per cent.

Winners of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) are set to reap big after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) increased the prize money 75 per cent.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the delayed tournament that will take place from February 1-28 with 18 nations participating and for the winners, $3.5 (Ksh452 million) is lying in wait.

CAF has made the decision to boost the prize money to make the competition more attractive with the total prize pool also increased by 32 per cent to $10.4 million (Ksh1.3 billion).

“The CHAN is an important Competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players and will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF Competitions,” said CAF president Patrice Motsepe via a statement.

“This Competition is part of our strategy of investing in African football and making it appealing and attractive to football fans, TV viewers, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders in Africa and worldwide.”

Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will join Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola and Madagascar at the tournament, whose draw will be conducted on January 15 in Nairobi.

The tournament, played only by players featuring in African leagues, will take place at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium (60,000) in Tanzania, Namboole Stadium (45,000) in Uganda, Nyayo National Stadium (18,000) and Kasarani Stadium (55,000), both in Kenya, and Amaan Stadium (20,000) in Zanzibar.

Senegal are the current champions after beating hosts Algeria on post-match penalties to win the 2022 edition, joining Libya (2014) and Tunisia (2011) as countries that have won the competition once while DR Congo (2009 and 2016) and Morocco (2018 and 2020) are two-time champions.
