The Kenyan government has provided timelines for when Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums will be ready to host the delayed CHAN 2024 tournament.

Kenyans can expect to see new look Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums by the end of June after the government provided timelines for when the two venues will be completed.

Nyayo and Kasarani are undergoing renovation to make them ready for the delayed 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) as they have been earmarked to host the tournament when Kenya co-hosts the event alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

As per a detailed plan for their completion issued by the Ministry of Defence, phase one of Nyayo Stadium is 70 per cent ready, having started renovation work on December 17, 2024 and will be opened by June 17, 2025 with the state spending Ksh1.84 billion on it.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya said that Kasarani Stadium upgrade will cost Ksh6.7 billion with Ksh3.6 billion allocated for the first phase ahead of the CHAN tournament while an additional Ksh3.1 billion will be used for the second phase to get the facility ready to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

CHAN 2024 was supposed to kick off on February 1, 2025 but the tournament was postponed due to the slow progress of infrastructure development in the host nations as well as concerns over the league calendar on the continent and will now kick off on August 2.

That gave Kenya time to complete the hosting venues and the projected timelines means both facilities will be ready one month before the tournament kicks off with Harambee Stars in a tough Group A that has Morocco, Angola, DR Congo and Zambia.
