CF Montreal suffer rough start without Victor Wanyama as Messi breaks another record

Victor Wanyama’s former club CF Montreal has had a poor start to their MLS season with no win in their opening seven games as Lionel Messi continues breaking records.

Victor Wanyama may now be playing in Scotland but he may have an eye on what is happening at his former club, CF Montreal.

Wanyama left the MLS club at the expiry of his contract last November, after falling down the pecking order, as he had become a bit-part player under coach Hernan Losada and his successor Laurent Courtois.

The club also struggled to impose themselves and missed out of the MLS playoffs. However, any hopes of a quick change in fortunes are not there yet as they have started their 2025 season in woeful fashion.

Montreal are yet to win a match since the season started two months ago, playing seven matches and managing just two draws, which leaves them rock bottom of their Eastern Conference table with just two points, already 13 behind leaders Columbus Crew.

Part of what has been blamed for the poor start is that all seven games have been away and there is optimism that they will kick start their season at home to Charlotte FC but there is no guarantee that they will win because their next opponent is fourth on the log and 11 points ahead.

The other reason is that Montreal might have been left short when they lost a number of experienced players like Wanyama, striker Josef Martinez and key midfielder Mathieu Choiniere.

Montreal made lots of changes in the off-season and the new players have taken longer than expected to bed in, leading to a poor start.

Meanwhile, as Montreal struggle, there are no such worries for Inter Miami whose talisman Lionel Messi set a new record in his team’s 1-1 draw with Toronto FC.

In his 29th MLS regular season match, Messi scored a great left-footed half-volley just before the break to level matters.

Messi has scored three goals and provided two assists in four matches and this was his first goal against Toronto but most importantly, he has reached 44 goal contributions for Inter Miami, the most by any player at the club, after surpassing fellow Argentine Gonzalo Higuain, who had 43.
