Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was celebrated in the streets of Doha, hours after leading Al Duhail to their first trophy of the season.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed his delight after being celebrated in the streets of Doha for his goal scoring exploits with Al Duhail.

Just hours after leading Al Duhail to their first trophy of the season, Doha streets paid glowing tribute to Olunga when a building was lit up with his image and name, showing just how popular he is in the Qatari capital.

Olunga scored the opening goal as Al Duhail beat Al Arabi 2-1 in the Qatar Stars Cup final on Friday to hand Christophe Galtier’s men the trophy as they continue their impressive season.

“Light up streets of Doha. It’s festive season,” Olunga posted on social media following the honour with his fans expressing their admiration for the appreciation the player is receiving on foreign land.

“Being visible in foreign country is not easy. This is the culmination of hard work and determination which led to the success,” observed one of his followers.

“Appreciate where you are appreciated. Wow, these countries know how to appreciate their heroes,” another one posted.

“But in Kenya, we don't appreciate anything, other countries always celebrate their heroes,” said another fan.

“A prophet is always appreciated far from hometown.”

“Congratulations, captain. More wins and trophies to come,” Olunga’s Harambee Stars team-mate Patrick Matasi also weighed in.

Olunga has maintained his hot scoring streak for Al Duahil this season and became their all-time leading scorer in November when he netted his 121st goal for the club.

Besides leading them to the cup glory, he has also been instrumental in their run to the top of the Qatar Stars League table, having scored eight league goals to continue his chase for the Golden Boot Award.
