Cameroon vs Kenya: The stats that should worry Harambee Stars

Kenya and Cameroon are set to face off twice on four days during their 2025 AFCON qualifiers but can Harambee Stars defy Indomitable Lions’ favourable statistics?

Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has expressed confidence of getting a positive result against Cameroon but the numbers suggest it will not be an easy tie.

Kenya and Cameroon face off in Doula on October 11 before the return leg in Kampala three days later in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

However, head-to-head meetings against the Indomitable Lions are skewed in the West African nation’s favour which points to a tough task ahead for Firat’s men.

In all eight meetings, Cameroon are undefeated against Kenya, having won four with the others ending in draws.

The two teams last faced off 14 years ago when Cameroon recorded a 3-1 win in a friendly match in January 2010, that coming after back-to-back 1-1 and 0-0 draws in AFCON qualifiers in July and February 1997.

The first meeting between the two teams took place in February 1972, when Cameroon won 2-1 and they followed it up with a 3-1 win in July 1984. Harambee Stars would force a 3-3 draw in the 1987 All Africa Games, before a goalless stalemate in an AFCON qualifier the following year before Cameroon won 2-0 in 1990.

While current form and tactical setup will largely dictate the outcome of the clash, Harambee Stars cannot ignore history, which favours the five-time African champions.

Cameroon boast a star-studded squad but have not impressed in their recent matches, winning two of their last five games.

The Indomitable Lions exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the Round of 16 following a 2-0 loss to Nigeria and since then, they have beaten Cape Verde 4-1, drawn 1-1 with Angola, secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Namibia before a goalless draw with Zimbabwe.

Those results have left coach Marc Brys and his charges under pressure to impress, which might perhaps give Kenya hope, but the stats mean Harambee Stars have their work cut out.
