Ajax ran riot against Cambuur, picking up their second league win in a row since before the World Cup break.
Ajax were at their ruthless best against bottom-of-the-table side Cambuur, beating them 5-0. Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey was an unused substitute.
Ajax went away to the Cambuur-Stadion in a bid to pick up their second win on the bounce after a run of seven league games without a win. They found an easy opponent in Cambuur, who have lost eight of their last ten league games.
Ajax dominated proceedings from the start and went ahead as early as the 16th minute on a Davy Klaassen strike. The lead was doubled 20 minutes later when Steven Berghuis scored his first of the day in the 36th minute.
Ajax continued in the second half their dominant displays from the first and scored in the 64th minute, and Berghuis got his second. Substitute Brian Brobbey made it four in the 79th minute, before doubling his tally to make it five in the 90+3rd minute.
How it happened
The first goal of the game was a portrait of the entire match itself, an effortless encounter. Davy Klaassen teed up Dusan Tadic, who tapped the ball in from close range. The second was a tad more complicated, with Berghuis running into a cheeky lob pass from Mohammed Kudus to head into the net. The goal was met with protest from the Cambuur players, as they thought Berghuis was in an offside position; however, VAR ruled the goal as legal.
The scorer of the first goal combined with the scorer of the second as Tadic threaded the ball through to Berghuis, who side-stepped his marker to rifle the ball into the bottom left corner.
Brobbey came on for Tadic in the 73rd minute and registered himself on the scoresheet only six minutes later. The young striker displayed his goalscorer's instincts as his ace positioning placed him on the path of a generous rebound before blasting the ball into the roof of the net. Brobbery would match Berghuis for a brace, finishing into the bottom right corner after being put through by the former Feyenoord winger.
Calvin Bassey on the bench again
The Nigerian left-back/centre-back was on the bench again for this game after he was unnamed in the starting lineup of the previous game, a 4-1 victory over Excelsior.
Unlike his previous appearance, when he came on as a defensive substitute in the 79th minute for Steven Berghuis to shore up the defense following a 3-1 lead, the Nigerian international was an unused substitute in this game.
