Calvin Bassey Biography

Calvin Bassey's football journey began in Italy, where he was born, but his development as a player took place in England after relocating to London at a young age.

After rejections at Leyton Orient, Crystal Palace and Charlton, he joined Leicester City's academy in September 2015 at 15, showcasing his talent with their under-18 and under-23 sides, though the defender never featured for the Foxes’ senior team.

In the summer of 2020, Bassey signed for Rangers in Scotland, marking a turning point in his career.

He played a key role in their historic 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title win, where they went undefeated and conceded a record-low 13 goals, keeping a landmark 26 clean sheets.

Bassey's versatility shone through in the 2021/22 season as he featured at both left-back and centre-back. He helped Rangers win the Scottish Cup and reach the UEFA Europa League final, where his performance earned widespread praise despite their penalty shootout defeat.

His impressive displays attracted attention from Dutch giants Ajax, who secured his services for a club-record fee of around €23m (£20m).

Bassey continued to develop in the Netherlands, gaining valuable Champions League experience and contributing defensively and offensively, scoring once and setting up five goals, though he suffered untold criticism from ex-Ajax players and pundits.

On the international scene, Bassey chose to represent Nigeria, making his debut against Ghana in March 2022.

He has become a regular for the Super Eagles, playing a crucial role in their run to the AFCON 2023 final.

Despite being eligible for Italy and England, Calvin Bassey committed to Nigeria in 2021 and was part of the squad for the pair of Super Eagles’ 2022 World Cup qualifying matches against the Central African Republic in October 2021.

However, the defender did not make his debut until March 2022, featuring in both World Cup qualifying playoff games against West African neighbours Ghana, starting for the first time in the reverse fixture in Abuja.

He was part of the Super Eagles side to reach the AFCON 2023 final, playing every match — starting all but one of Nigeria’s seven games — as the three-time African champions fell to tournament hosts Cote d'Ivoire at the last hurdle.
