Lookman’s stellar season puts him among the greats
The 27-year-old Atalanta winger is currently enjoying a stellar year on and off the pitch, making waves in European football and Africa as he vies for top accolades like the African Player of the Year (CAF POTY) award and a nomination in the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards.
Lookman’s claim to fame this season is not just his opinions but also his exceptional performances for both club and country.
The Nigerian international has scored 11 goals and provided five assists this season and is the player with the most goal involvements in Serie A this calendar year.
His contributions were pivotal as he led Atalanta to their first UEFA Europa League title, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen while also getting three crucial strikes at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the Super Eagles reach the tournament final.
Lookman reveals his GOAT
When asked about his choice between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Lookman didn’t hesitate to name Ronaldo as his GOAT. "To me, Ronaldo is my GOAT," he stated confidently.
Lookman also cited both Ronaldo and Messi as inspirations growing up, along with Brazilian icon Robinho in a previous interview.
“Robinho was a different player, and of course, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Lookman said, adding, “My football is instinctive. If I think about it too much, I freeze.”
As he continues to thrive in his career, fans of Nigeria’s Super Eagles will hope that Lookman can emulate his idol Ronaldo by bringing some much-needed silverware to his national team as he has done with his club.
