AFCON 2027 CAF EXCO loss shouldn’t affect the AFCON 2027 Pamoja bid, Magogo says

Magogo was booted out as the exco representing the CECAFA region after losing to Sudan’s Dr Mutasim Gafar Sirelkhatim at the 45th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.

FUFA president Eng. Moses Magogo believes that the East African AFCON 2027 Pamoja bid will succeed despite the fact that he no longer sits on the CAF executive committee.

Magogo was booted out as the exco representing the CECAFA region after losing to Sudan’s Dr Mutasim Gafar Sirelkhatim at the 45th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.

The FUFA boss, who has been at the forefront of pushing the bid, was convinced that his position as a CAF exco member would help influence the decision-makers to consider the bid.

“As a member of the CAF Executive that decides who hosts, we will make a good case to host Africa in East Africa for the 1st time,” he said previously.

Professionalism

Magogo believes that the bid will be successful without his influence, considering that Price Waterhouse Coopers, an internationally reputable firm, is in charge of the inspection process.

“The inspectors who are coming here are from PWC (Price Waterhouse Cooper) and are professional people and are going to write the report as is,” Magogo said during a press conference on Tuesday at the FUFA House in Kampala.

“I believe CAF is professional enough and interested in ensuring that this region also gets an opportunity to host the Africa Cup of Nations, so for me, it’s more about the merits than the individual sentiments,” he expressed his optimism.

The inspection has already arrived in Kenya to start the exercise and is expected in the country anytime soon.

Regional support

The FUFA president has also asked for support from his successor Mutasim Gafar to push the agenda on behalf of the CECAFA region.

“We have agreed as CECAFA countries to support the bid,” he says before sending his clarion call to Mutasim; “…the members of the executive committee of CAF are the representatives of the regions and, therefore, they represent our views, so we believe that whoever is sitting in the EXCO for this region will definitely support the position of CECAFA.”

The CAF executive committee members will decide the hosts of the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations on August 15th.
