The post-Micho era for the Uganda Cranes commenced with a setback, as they succumbed to a defeat against the West African team, Mali, during Friday night’s international friendly.

The showdown took place in Bamako at the Stade du 26 Mars. Morley Byekwaso, overseeing from the sidelines, saw his team edged out 1-0 by the Eagles.

Nevertheless, Byekwaso, also the assistant coach for SC Villa, expressed his admiration for the debutants — Rogers Mugisha, Hudu Mulikyi, and Denis Omedi. Their performances caught his attention and he commended their efforts on the field.

“I’m appreciative of our players; they showcased commendable skills against a well-prepared team of overseas-based professionals. Our newcomers especially made a mark; it was an encouraging debut for them,” said Byekwaso.

He further emphasized the importance of consistency, adding: “They need to maintain their form at their respective clubs. Representing the national side requires immense self-belief.”

Hudu Mulikyi played through the entire duration of the game, while Rogers Mugisha made way for fellow newcomer Denis Omedi in the 57th minute. Usama Arafat and Ibrahim Kasule also came on to mark their maiden caps for the Cranes.

The Cranes managed to hold their ground until the 71st minute. A foul committed by URA FC’s holding midfielder, Hudu Mulikyi, inside the penalty area led the referee to award a spot-kick.
