Vipers, meanwhile are not in league action until next week when they host Luyinda’s Giants at St. Mary’s Kitende. The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first round.
Fifteen games into the season, KCCA FC are yet to find their best rhythm and have been second best, performance-wise, in some of the top clashes.
Their first game of the second round was not any different. Hosts Wakiso Giants had majority of the ball on the day but it was KCCA who got the most important statistic to take the day.
The Kasasiro Boys struggled to get full control of the game as Wakiso won the battle in midfield.
Former KCCA players Tom Masiko and Lawrence Bukenya alongside captain Hassan Ssenyonjo dictated matters in the middle of the pack.
But it was Rogers Mato who reacted quickest to score after Allan Okello had been brought down in the Wakiso penalty area and that turned out to be the winner.
Whether the goal should have stood or not is a debate that might go on for a while. Referee Ali Sabila did not give the penalty and seemed to point to the centre after Mato’s goal.
His assistant then raised his flag for offside but after the two officials had a chat, Sabila awarded the goal to send KCCA players into wild celebrations.
“We struggled in the first half. They (Wakiso) were creating a lot of spaces behind our defence,” Byekwaso told Pulse Sports after the game.
Moses Aliro should have scored for the host after he was put through on goal by Tom Masiko but he delayed deciding to shoot, allowing Geoffrey Wasswa to recover and put in a last ditch tackle.
“Our Centre backs are a bit slow so it’s Derrick (Ochan) who did the best today. We needed to change and came back in the second half with a different approach,” Bkyewaso added.
John Luyinda Ayala’s side might have lost Ibrahim Kasule in the January transfer window but they still dominated proceedings and had KCCA concerned for the bigger part of the game.
“It is not easy picking points from here and all of you have seen how the team attacked well.”
“They (Wakiso) created chances but in football sometimes you need to have that luck to take the day,” Luyinda added.
The win saw KCCA move to 32 points, now five ahead of the chasing pack that has defending champions Vipers and Uganda Cup winners BUL.
